Freelance artist and stone sculptor. Born in Tokyo in 1979. Studied art in Tokyo and Stuttgart. Since 2022, he has been an artistic and technical instructor in the stone workshop at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart.
Shinroku Shimokawa works with stone. He explores it through observation and investigation, in constant dialogue with the material and its surroundings. The results of his work lie between classical stone sculpture, performative research, video and photography.
Nature and living with nature play an essential role in his artistic practice. His artist’s cookbook You Can't Eat Stones was named one of Germany’s most beautiful books in 2021.
