Since completing her Master's degree in Art Education with a specialisation in "Exhibiting and Mediating" — now Curatorial Studies — at Zurich University of the Arts in 2017, Antonella Barone has been committed to promoting, increasing the visibility of and establishing a sustainable position for contemporary artists from Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
In 2018, she co-curated JKON (Jungkunst Olten), among other projects. In 2019, together with Tanja Breu, she founded the curatorial collective baronebreu, which provides a platform particularly for performative, installation-based and process-oriented artistic practices. From 2023 to 2024, Barone co-curated the kunstkasten in Winterthur with Tanja Breu, and since 2025 she has held sole responsibility for its curatorial direction.
Barone's curatorial practice is characterised by close, dialogical and practice-oriented collaboration with artists. Her work centres on participatory and process-based approaches, event-based exhibition formats and the development of spaces in which artistic production, mediation and reception intersect.
A further focus lies on building sustainable networks and on continuously cultivating and developing relationships between artists, institutions and audiences.
Her curatorial approach is grounded in an inclusive and diversity-oriented understanding of contemporary exhibition practice. Her focus is both on supporting emerging artists and on increasing the visibility of established mid-career positions, with particular attention to the artistic practices of women and of actors who are structurally underrepresented within the art world.
Alongside her exhibition work, Barone writes texts on art theory and art mediation and supports independent artists in contextualising, communicating and increasing the visibility of their artistic positions.
