Life modelling I

We deal with measurement and proportion of the human body. Our own observations of the basic proportions give us security when building up clay sketches and make it easier to work in front of a life model.

Figure Modelling I
At the heart of this course is the encounter with the living model. In clay, we seek a likeness of the human being as we perceive them – in their posture, their presence, and their proportions.
Proportions & Large Form
Through sketches and smaller as well as larger figures, we explore the dimensions of the body and arrive at the “Large Form,” which gives the whole its stability and expression.
Tools & Surface
The chosen tool shapes the texture and appearance of the figure. Different techniques open up possibilities for further realisations in stone, plaster, or other materials.
Statics & Relief
The classical poses – standing, sitting, lying – show different degrees of stability. Supporting elements such as a cloth, a rod, a chair, or a pedestal may be integrated visibly – as well as invisible supports like internal wire or steel frameworks. The bas-relief also has a special place here: it moves between image and sculptural body and can easily be cast in plaster.
Clay & Process
During the work the figure remains moist; during the subsequent drying process, patience and care are required to avoid cracks. Built-in supports must be removed in time – or the still-moist clay figure can be cast in plaster at home.
Result
In the end, the figure is not only form but also a record of our spatial perception and our dialogue with the living model.

There will be an additional charge of CHF 80.- per person for the model.

The course language is German.

Individual figures can be cast in the silicone casting course.
